Description
Dostinex 0.5Mg 8Tab contains 0.5 milligrams of cabergoline per tablet, provided in a pack of 8 tablets. Cabergoline is a long-acting dopamine receptor agonist that primarily acts on D2 receptors. It is primarily used to treat conditions caused by an excess of prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. Dostinex is effective in lowering prolactin levels and is commonly prescribed for:
- Hyperprolactinemia: A condition characterized by abnormally high levels of prolactin in the blood, which can cause symptoms such as menstrual irregularities (amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea), infertility, galactorrhea (spontaneous milk production not related to pregnancy or breastfeeding), and sexual dysfunction in both men and women.
- Prolactinomas: Benign tumors of the pituitary gland that produce excess prolactin. Dostinex can help to shrink these tumors and reduce prolactin levels.
- Inhibition of lactation: Sometimes used to stop breast milk production when medically indicated, such as after stillbirth or abortion, or for maternal medical reasons.
Due to its long-acting nature, Dostinex is typically taken less frequently than other dopamine agonists.
Directions for Use:
The dosage of Dostinex varies depending on the condition being treated and the individual’s response. For hyperprolactinemia, the usual starting dose is 0.25 mg once or twice a week, with gradual increases as determined by your doctor based on prolactin level monitoring. For inhibition of lactation, a single dose is usually administered within the first day postpartum. Always follow your doctor’s instructions precisely regarding the dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and are usually taken with food to help reduce potential gastrointestinal side effects.
Precautions:
- Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to cabergoline or any other ergot derivatives.
- Provide your doctor with your complete medical history, especially if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, pulmonary fibrosis or other fibrotic disorders, valvular heart disease, severe liver disease, or a history of psychotic disorders.
- Your doctor may perform an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) before starting treatment with Dostinex to assess the health of your heart valves. Periodic monitoring with echocardiograms may also be recommended during long-term treatment.
- Dostinex can cause a decrease in blood pressure, especially when starting treatment. You should be cautious when getting up from a sitting or lying position to avoid dizziness or lightheadedness.
- Inform your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If pregnancy occurs during Dostinex treatment, discuss the continuation of the medication with your doctor. It is generally not recommended to breastfeed while taking Dostinex as it inhibits prolactin secretion.
- Drowsiness and fatigue are possible side effects, especially during the first few days of treatment. Exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
- Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, constipation, and abdominal discomfort may occur, particularly at the start of treatment. Taking Dostinex with food may help to reduce these effects.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements, as interactions can occur. Particular caution should be exercised with other dopamine agonists or antagonists, and medications that affect blood pressure.
- Keep this medication out of the reach of children. In case of overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
- Store Dostinex 0.5Mg tablets at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
